Google News Becoming Google News Plus?

Yesterday on the Google News blog, product manager Scott Zuccarino announced a new feature for those who keep up with their news through Google: Realtime Coverage pages that include results from Google+. Right now, this option is only available for people who have signed up for Google+ and are checking out the U.S. edition of Google News, but here's a sample screenshot of what a Realtime Coverage page looks like.


Of course, if you hate this feature you can modify your Google News settings to turn it off or simply sign out of Google altogether, but it does look like the search giant is continually looking for more ways to push the Google+ platform. (That's not really a shocker, though, is it?)

If your brand has a Google+ presence, will this new feature help improve your overall Google Search visibility? In a recent experiment conducted by Tasty Placement, the web design and SEO company found that even having a Google+ brand page with a fairly modest number of followers substantially improved Google ranking for a website. While this was an isolated experiment and the results shouldn't be considered scientific, the findings are still very interesting and well worth noting.

How to Avoid Personalized Google Search Results and Ads in Chrome


Personalized Google results are supposed to be useful. The idea is to deliver the most relevant content for you based on your past searches. The problem is that there are often scenarios where you don’t want personalized search results. If you are trying to do research then you may well find this personalization extremely annoying. Thankfully there is always a way to get round the problem.

Google personalizes your results using two methods. One uses your Web search history whenever you are logged in to any Google service. The other uses a cookie to store your search information.

If you are logged in to a Google account, on any page of Google results you should see a globe icon at the top right and you can hit that to Hide personal results. You simply hit the person icon to switch back but you’ll find it probably switches back automatically when you start a new session. If you want to make it permanent then hit the Gear at the top right and select Search settings then scroll down until you see Personal settings and choose Do not use personal results. That will now work for you when you are signed in to your Google account but when you sign out you may find your results are personalized again.

If you aren't signed in to a Google account then go to http://www.google.com/history/optout and select Disable customizations based on search activity.

There are other ways to avoid personalized results.

One of the simplest ways is to add &pws=0 to the URL of a search query. If you use Google Chrome then all you have to do is click on the “wrench” icon at the top right and select New Incognito Window. Chrome’s incognito mode will automatically add &pws=0 to your searches so you shouldn’t be getting personalized results.

This SEO blog face-off gives you an analysis of the results you might get with each method. It seems that turning off personalization in your Google account may be the best option to avoid personalized Google search results.

If you want to avoid personalized Google ads there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that there’s an extension for Chrome users called Keep My Opt-Outs which prevents ad personalization via cookies. The bad news is for anyone not using Chrome because that’s the only browser it works for.

Prismatic: A Great Social Media and Discovery Tool (and My New Addiction)

I spend a heckuva lot of time everyday searching for and reading the latest news and opinions on project management, content marketing, the economy, higher education and several other topics that are near and dear to my heart. While I love the actual "reading" and "discussion" parts of my day, the "searching" part can be enormously frustrating. Sure, I get a lot of great recommendations from people on Twitter and Google+, and Alltop is an awesome tool that helps me manage feeds from my favorite publishers, but I also like finding new authors and sites.

Of course, I'm greedy enough to want to be able to do all of those things with one tool. When hearing about some new social media or media discovery tool, I used to rush to check it out. Unfortunately, most of the time I was disappointed -- not because the new apps were bad, but because generally, they performed the same functions as the ones I was already using. So, when I first received an invitation to try Prismatic a while back, I simply filed it and figured I'd take a look when and if I had time.

About a week or so ago, I heard some others praising Prismatic and remembered the invitation so I decided to go ahead and take a look for myself. And, WOW, I sure do wish I had checked it out sooner. It's really both a social media and a media discovery tool. It links up to your Twitter account and uses info from there to help give initial recommendations for topics and publishers you might like, but it also has a global search tool so you can dig down into any topic you want. I'm including a screenshot below so you can get an idea of what the interface looks like.


Prismatic also lets you save topics and specific publishers to your Interests list, favorite stories so you read them later, see recent tweets that have been made about each story, tweet the article yourself, find related stories -- well, in short, it does almost everything I want to do. I still use HootSuite to help me schedule certain items and track results, but I've replaced almost all of the other apps I was using in the past with Prismatic. I’m a big fan of LinkedIn and you should be too. Forget about the inconvenient line on Facebook between work and life, or the need to have multiple Twitter accounts to cater for different niches. With LinkedIn you are on a purely professional platform where the aim is to network and promote yourself. There are groups for discussions and advice on all kinds of industries, there are job listings and tips galore, and there are lots of like-minded professionals looking to connect. 


Best of all LinkedIn serves as your online resume which is ideal for freelancers of any type. It is a free advert for your services that you can optimize and promote. Beta of Really Cool Social Media Tool


Yesterday, I had a demo of a social media tool I thought I'd share with everyone.  It has a lot of potential, and they are making some great investments in its growth.

Everyone knows how difficult it is it to compose a tweet.  You'd think with only 140 characters, it should be a breeze.  But with hashtags, mentions, retweets, and shortened URL's, it takes me like an hour to do a good one!  Okay, well slight exaggeration, but you get the picture.

You can definitely do the autopost strategy.  But you're really not inserting your own original thoughts into the tweet.  So how effective is that on a long-term basis?  You're also not leveraging any of the hashtags or tweet targeting tools out there.

This company, Mashoutable, is trying to change all that with their easy to use tool.  It allows you to construct tweets with a few clicks of a button incorporating data from your own twitter feed, followers, and what's trending out there.

Yes! You Do Need a Company Blog

The most accessible way to dip your toe in the waters of content marketing is to start a company blog. It’s a tactic that can work for any size of business and if you do it right then it will generate targeted traffic that would otherwise cost you a lot of advertising dollars to pull in. According to HubSpot research more than half of all Internet users read blogs at least once a month and more than one third of U.S. companies use blogs for marketing purposes.



The potential value of blogs is definitely being recognised. According to the Content Marketing Institute blogs are one of the most popular content marketing tactics and while 51% of marketers used blogs in 2010 that figure went up to 65% in 2011.

Easy To Set Up

One of the big attractions of starting a company blog is that it is relatively easy. Not only can you find plenty of free platforms, from WordPress to Blogger, they also have CMS (content management systems) on the back end that anyone can learn to use. This makes it easy to add users, and to create, schedule and publish content. What Do You Think of Visually's Infographic Creation Tools?

If you're an infographic junkie like me, you've probably heard of Visually -- a great site with tons of infographics and infovideos on almost every subject imaginable. Not only is Visually an awesome source for information, it's also a terrific site to browse when you're looking for design and content inspiration.

A few weeks ago, Visually rolled out the first stage of its instant infographic creation tools. When I heard the announcement, I immediately rushed to the site to check the new feature out. Unfortunately, it seemed that I wasn't the only one looking forward to this addition. At that time, when I was trying to test out the creation tools, the site kept hanging or sending error messages back to me -- probably because so many people were trying to access it at once.

Although I did manage to test the tools a bit that day, I finally decided to wait with intentions of going back later when all the initial kinks and traffic issues had been worked out. Of course, we all know how that goes. With so many other things on my plate, I forgot completely about testing the tools again until this week.

However, I did manage to find an hour to play around with the infographic creation app yesterday, and I can definitely see the potential. Right now, the options are still fairly limited and you can only create a handful of different infographics, all of which utilize Twitter or Facebook data. So, while the customization potential currently isn't that great, I can still see how a lot of potential for this application -- especially if Visually continues to develop it and incorporate new features.

As an example, for one of the infographic options, all you have to do is enter a Twitter hashtag. Then, after a few seconds of processing time, you'll wind up with an infographic that gives information about that hashtag's performance over the last month. Why Did Facebook Splurge $1 Billion on Instagram?


So what do you think about Facebook’s purchase of Instagram? They paid $1 billion for a two-year old photo sharing network with no profits. If you’re not familiar with Instagram it is an app, originally released for the iPhone back in October 2010. It allows users to apply 17 different filters to their photos and upload them to a website where they can be shared and discussed.

With over 30 million downloads there is no doubting its popularity. When they released the Android version of the app last week it was downloaded more than 1 million times in 12 hours. With more than 5 million new photos being added every day and a celebrity user base that includes Justin Bieber and the President, not to mention big brands like MTV and Burberry, this is clearly more than a photo filter app.

Facebook is already the most popular photo-sharing service in the world, with more than 250 million images uploaded daily. So why would Facebook splash out the largest amount paid for a profitless start up since Google bought YouTube?

Instagram is a social network for sharing photos. Beyond the popularity and behind the accessibly simple façade there is quite a lot going on. Instagram offers some new features in the shape of their fun filters and, perhaps more importantly, access to an efficient and highly usable mobile app service. Facebook also removes a potential competitor and ensures that no one else buys them. Win-win.

We’ll just have to wait and see how long it takes for Instagram’s features to be rolled into Facebook. Is it a smart move by Zuckerburg and co, or does it suggest a certain amount of insecurity?

Facebook Ads vs. Google Ads: Which Are You More Likely to Click?


The other day I was telling a friend about a video hosting site that I’m planning to sign up with, and one of the first things she asked was, “How did you hear about it?”

I’ll be honest. I had to stop and think about that question for a few minutes, and trace back in my mind to the first time I heard about the service. I knew that I had been receiving a weekly newsletter-type email from the company for a while so I must have given it my address at some point. I thought a little more and remembered that I had entered my email address in order to gain access to an instructional video that I wanted to watch. But what had led me to that web page with the instructional video? Oh yeah! It was a Facebook ad.

To be fair, I fully recognize that it was the company’s awesome content marketing strategy that kept the brand active in my mind and finally converted me. But, it’s hard to say how long it would have taken me to find the hosting service – or if I ever would have found it at all – if I had not seen the original Facebook ad.

This made me start thinking more about Facebook ads in general, and how I’m far more likely to click on them than Google ads. In fact, I can’t even remember the last time I clicked on a Google ad. Despite the amazing amount of data that Google must have about me, Google ads rarely seem relevant or interesting. On the other hand, many of the ads I see on my Facebook page are very relevant to my current interests and, of course, that makes me quite likely to click them.

So, at least in my particular case, it seems like Facebook does a far better job at matching advertisements to my true interests than Google does, but I’m very curious about what type of experience other people are having. 7 Classic Content Marketing Mistakes


Content marketing has really taken off. According to the ContentMarketing Institute 9 out of 10 organizations employ some kind of content marketing strategy. The most popular plan is to produce articles and blogs related to your business and engage with existing and potential customers through social media. It doesn’t work for everyone and that’s mainly because a lot of people don’t really understand the idea behind content marketing in the first place. So what can go wrong?

Listen To My Sales Pitch

The idea of marketing is to increase sales…right? All marketing must have a call to action or how will I ever convert…right? Wrong! Forget about focussing on what you get out of it and focus on what the potential customer gets out of it. The idea behind content marketing is that you offer the potential customer something useful - something that solves a problem for them. How often do you read lengthy sales pitches? Do you enjoy self-referential advertorial pieces that are clearly designed to persuade you to buy? No, and neither does anyone else.

The American Marketing Association defines marketing like this -
“Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.”
The word you need to pick out of that sentence is value. If you don’t offer some value then your content marketing efforts will fail.

We Don’t Need Professional Writers

Everyone can write can’t they? Why should we spend money on a professional when we can get the intern to do it? Well the truth is – you get what you pay for. A well briefed, professional copy writer will produce quality content that will serve you for months or even years. A badly written, awkward, or even grammatically incorrect article, will turn people away, discourage trust and harm your brand.

If you were going to redesign your reception area, or create a new look for your website you wouldn’t ask your existing staff to do it - you would hire a professional. The same thing applies to your content.

I Can’t Be Bothered This Week

If you want to show off great knowledge of your industry then a regular blog is a fantastic way to highlight that. You can display your company’s thought leadership, enhance your reputation and encourage people to visit regularly.

The main problem with company blogs is that they don’t have a proper editorial calendar. As soon as the office is busy the first thing that gets ditched is the company blog (especially if you assign it to staff – see above). To get value from your blogging efforts you need to do it regularly and you need to maintain a high standard. You should also understand that it takes time to gain traction through content marketing. It’s not something that will work over night.

Quantity Over Quality

Sometimes the problem isn’t a lack of content - it’s an overabundance of content. You don’t want three separate blogs a day (one on the coffee machine, one on what you saw on the way to work and just one about your actual business), along with an infographic, a podcast and a new white paper. You want to produce quality content, leverage that content and promote it properly. Give it room to breathe and find an audience, and then rinse and repeat.

SEO, SEO and SEO

We have optimized the hell out of this copy. Our target keywords are scattered optimally, the headers are perfect and we’re ranking high in the search results. Why isn’t it resulting in more sales?

There’s no denying that SERP rankings are important. You want to rank as high as possible in the search engines for search terms that relate to your product. You also want to ensure that the people who land on your page actually get what they came for. Fluff content, keyword stuffing and a lack of engaging or useful information is never going to please customers. Even if you can “game” search engines to get them there in the first place they will leave pretty quickly and they won’t come back.

Search engines are getting better and better at spotting hollow content and people are wise to SEO over substance. Don’t forget about SEO in your content marketing but remember it is only part of the picture. Quality content is the most important thing.

How Does It Relate?

We’ve already discussed why SEO isn’t enough but it’s also worth mentioning that great content isn’t enough. You could write the best analysis of mortgage types or the greatest review of that movie you watched last night but if your business sells suitcases then it won’t do you any good. It might pull in loads of traffic but if it doesn’t relate to your business in some way then how is it going to boost your business? That traffic will never convert to sales and it won’t hang around to read the rest of your content.

The idea with content marketing is to offer value in your business area. Establish your credentials, build some trust in potential customers that you know what you’re talking about and the idea that your service or product is worth a look will naturally follow.

Relying On Social Media

The idea that social media is the golden ticket to every marketer’s dream – a steady supply of free leads – may be flawed. You could have 20,000 followers on Twitter but how many of them click the links you post and read the content? You might be sucking in 10,000 unique visitors a day from Stumble Upon but how does that traffic convert?

The truth is that social media is a commitment and if you don’t invest properly then you won’t get anything back. There are a lot of ways to build a following on Twitter and you can submit your content to Digg, Stumble Upon, Reddit and everyone else, but if you want targeted traffic you need a strategy. You don’t need to pull in thousands of people every day – you need to pull in the people who are actually seeking your services or product and are ready to buy. Don’t be fooled by big numbers – focus on the traffic that is actually converting.

Plan Your Content Marketing Strategy and Then Execute

These are just seven classic content marketing mistakes that many businesses make. The truth is there are many more ways you can go wrong. There also isn’t a definite recipe for success. Every business is different. That’s why you need to take time to analyse your business and plan a content marketing strategy that will work for you. Focus on what you expect it to achieve and then plan it carefully before you actually begin.

Want to Share Netflix Favorites? There’s an App for That! Well, Maybe Not!


In our thirst for social media, we are constantly sharing. We share links and shout out intimate details on Facebook and we love to exchange stuff we “Stumble Upon” and “Digg.” Adventurous folks are sharing their ideas via TED Talks and for those clever with 140 characters or less, there’s Twitter. And, let’s not forget about the emergence of Google+.

Enter the Netflix App geared towards even more sharing via Facebook pages. Want to share that old television series Sea Hunt with your friends? What about a great movie you just watched? Who wouldn’t want to share it with their BFFs? There’s a grand idea behind the Netflix App but if you live in the United States, forget about it — the app apparently is illegal — allowing others to see what you’re watching on Netflix is breaking the law!

One post on CNNMoney, “Why Netflix’s App Would Be Illegal” by Julianne Pepitone explained what’s behind the legalities of using a Netflix App in America: The 1980s Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA).

According to Pepitone, VPPA came about after a “Washington City Paper talked to a video store clerk into giving him (Robert) Bork’s rental history.” In 1987, Robert Bork, a very conservative Supreme Court nominee lost the nomination and although one could find many reasons why Bork didn’t get the top judge job, VPPA ensured it would be illegal for anyone to obtain another’s video rental history for privacy purposes.

How Private Are We?

In a blog post by Netflix Director of Government Relations, Michael Drobac, he said of the Facebook app sharing: “We’ll continue to look at these issues and find ways to bring you the easy, convenient and quality experiences you have come to expect, including ways to automatically share with your friends on Facebook.” Hmm?

I predict the sides on whether to amend or get rid of VPPA will be fierce in my opinion and I’ll explain why?

For one, if you look at the comments on the Netflix blog post you’re sure to get a chuckle or two. Many are still angry about the Netflix price increase. The whole mess angered Netflix users even after an apology and then a separation of church and state, so to speak — a Netflix user could choose either the DVD delivery or online streaming. Thankfully, Netflix also allowed users to have both rentals and streaming but at a price increase. I chose the streaming.

The comments on the blog post are indeed angry ones. Why? Netflix is urging users to contact Congress via an email link to help reform VPPA and most are saying “What? You want us to help you after you increased our prices?” Forget about it!

Secondly, I’d expect Facebook users to protest against this Netflix sharing app. I for one wouldn’t want anyone to know my video history by peeking into my queue or looking at recent rentals. Sure, I’m embarrassed I watched The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh like five or six times! I’d also pop fun at some of my family members who are adults yet are compelled to watch cartoon-type movies over and over again even though they have no actual kids at home. Heck my one sister would fall into this category—she sort of whispered to me over the phone she went and saw Puss n’ Boots with Antonio Banderas. Imagine what her Facebook friends would say!

But I digress. Facebook has invaded my life enough and I’m not fond of the timeline—I don’t wish to see a timeline going back to 1959! I also don’t want to share every tidbit of my life including the Netflix movies I download and stream through my Apple TV.

If I were single and some Facebook user thought I’d be great to take out on a date, they’d probably think I was in my 80s since I love Bette Davis and Cary Grant movies. I’d be judged by the movies and television shows I watch. If you’re reading this do you even remember the TV show Sea Hunt?

And, currently my profile pic is my favorite dog Cosmo — not named after the Seinfeld character! Usually during the NFL season I put up a pic of me wearing a Pittsburgh Steeler’s throwback helmet and only then would my possible date to be know I’m not in my 80s and actually much younger.

I hope VPPA isn’t overturned. I’d like to see Netflix sting a little — I’m sure many will agree with me — at least those leaving Netflix blog comments do!

Well, enough on the VPPA and Netflix’s attempt at app sharing on Facebook. You’ll either be for it or against it I suppose.

Time to run, I think I’ll watch Gunsmoke on Netflix and after that I may even watch an episode or two of Little House on the Prairie, maybe an episode of The Waltons too; but that my friends is just between me and you. Tootles!

If You Build It, Will They Come?


So you have a new website? Whether it is based on a great new idea, dedicated to covering an underserved niche, or aiming to promote your products or services, you have your work cut out getting it noticed. According to Royal Pingdom there are over 550 million websites in the world today and 300 million of them were added in 2011. Of course the truth is that many of them are inactive and attract little or no traffic.

You may be surprised at how many websites there are out there that receive no traffic. If you build it, they won’t necessarily come - you really need to give them a good reason. Using Alexa (which isn’t amazingly accurate but can give us a rough idea) we can get a ranking number for websites which is based on how many visits a website received over the last three months. The website with the most visits is number one and surprise, surprise – it’s Google.

What’s more revealing is taking a look at some low traffic websites. My own Scottish history website, Angry Pict, which I set up a few years ago has a modest amount of content and is very rarely updated. On average it gets around 230 unique visits per day (over the last three months) and that equates to an Alexa rank of 4,447,473. That ranking isn’t perfectly accurate but it does give you an idea of how little traffic the majority of websites out there must be getting.

How do you get traffic? It’s simple – you create content that people want, content that people are searching for, content that people want to share. The reason Angry Pict still gets traffic despite being updated only once in the last couple of years is that it has some content on subjects that people are searching for. If your website has no content then don’t expect any organic traffic. This is ultimately why content marketing is such a good idea.

If you create some content related to your business then:
  • you show off your expertise,
  • you are giving your potential customers something useful,
  • you are building brand awareness,
  • you are improving your business website’s ranking in the search engines,
  • you are encouraging people to share your content and spread your brand for free,
  • you are building potential leads.


Compare that with paying out a large sum to get someone to click on an ad and visit your site. They have no reason to stick around, no reason to share the website and no reason to come back. They also visit one time and they are gone. If you create content then it can pull in traffic indefinitely depending on the topic. Content marketing doesn’t just work; it is also more cost effective than traditional advertising.

So forget about fancy animations and expensive graphic design. If you really want people to visit your website give them a reason. Content is king and that’s never going to change.

Pinterest Responds to User Concerns by Updating Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy


Despite being one of the fastest growing social media sites on the Internet, Pinterest has been under heavy scrutiny for the past several weeks due to a clause in its Terms of Service that granted Pinterest the right to sell any content posted on the site. On top of that, many photographers, illustrators and other creative personalities have been less than pleased with the lack of concern that Pinterest seems to show when it comes to protecting intellectual property rights.

So, what does Pinterest have to say about all these concerns? Ben Silbermann, co-founder and CEO of Pinterest, seems not only to be listening to these concerns, but also taking active measures in response.

On March 23, a post was made on the official Pinterest blog to notify users that an updated Terms of Service, Acceptable Use Policy, and Privacy Policy will go into effect on April 6. This same post was sent out in an email to all Pinterest users, with a link to the updated terms. The first point noted in this communication should please all users:
Our original Terms stated that by posting content to Pinterest you grant Pinterest the right for to sell your content. Selling content was never our intention and we removed this from our updated Terms.
Very nice. I love the fact that Pinterest didn't try to just tweak its policy on this matter, but instead, removed it altogether.

But what about the concerns of copyright holders? That's a more complicated situation -- and to be quite honest, Pinterest's response could greatly affect how other sharing sites deal with the same types of issues. For the most part, Pinterest seems to be following the same path as other social media platforms by making a general statement in its Acceptable Use Policy that pinners are not allowed to post anything that "infringes any third party's Intellectual Property Rights, privacy rights, publicity rights, or other personal or proprietary rights" and then following up by checking out any content that has been flagged as being in violation of this agreement.

However, unlike many other leading social media sites, Pinterest does appear committed to taking this issue more seriously. For instance, last month Pinterest introduced a No Pin Tool that site owners could use to block people from pinning content from their sites. While many have pointed out that there are still lots of ways to get around this type of blocking, it's definitely a major step in the right direction -- and a step that shows Pinterest is genuinely interested in finding innovative solutions to a problem that is plaguing freelancers and independent content creators.

Awesome start, Pinterest. I love the Pinterest concept, but I've been very hesitant about pinning any items or getting involved in the user community because of the "selling content" and IP concerns. Now, I look forward to pinning away when April 6 rolls around and the new TOS goes into effect.

Forget the Future, Online News is the Here and Now


I can’t remember the last time I bought a physical newspaper. I rarely watch the news on TV. I now rely on the internet for my daily news fix and I consume more news than I ever did through traditional outlets. Whether it’s a newspaper website, an aggregator for hot news stories or a recommendation on Facebook or Twitter, the vast majority of the news I consume is online. Since I can access news wherever I happen to be with my smartphone I read more of it.

According to research from Pew Research Center I am not alone. More and more people are turning to the internet for their news. In fact the audience for online news has gone up 17.2% in the last year. Interestingly the audiences for network, local, audio and cable news have all grown as well. The big losers are magazines and newspapers. The newspaper industry has declined by a whopping 43% since the year 2000.

Around a quarter of the population now consume news on mobile devices. Smartphones and tablets are becoming more popular and the mobility factor is key. They aren’t actually replacing desktop computers or laptops, they are providing additional outlets. Many people are actually consuming more news now than they ever did before.

One widely reported finding was that, despite the increase in the popularity of social media, most people are not using it to find news. Only 10% of digital news consumers said they followed links from Facebook or Twitter “very often”. Despite the fact that 54% of U.S. citizens now have a Facebook account they are still accessing news directly through websites or apps.

As people move online for their news many outlets have to follow suit or risk extinction. Digital subscription models are expected to grow this year. Particularly with the growth of the tablet market, magazines have found a suitable alternative outlet and some publications are reporting success with digital subscriptions.

One year on, since launching a digital subscription model, the New York Times is reporting over 450,000 paying subscribers who shell out $15 to $35 per month for articles. They are so confident that they are reducing the number of free articles they offer readers from 20 per month to just 10.

Copyright Math: Another Reason Why People Don’t Respect IP Rights


It may not always seem this way, but in general, most people respect laws – except when they feel those laws are unjust. So, why do so many choose to ignore copyright laws? The hard fact is that a sizable portion of the population seems to believe that copyright laws exist merely for the benefit of large corporations who want to stick their greedy little hands deeper into your wallet and overcharge you for music, movies and other media.

What’s often forgotten is that the Internet – the same tool that makes it so easy for us to illegally distribute and attain copyrighted material – is also the instrument that allows creative personalities to bypass the big media outlets and self-publish their material. And, copyright laws are there to protect these startups and independents just as much as the big brands.

If people really want to fight back against the multi-billion dollar corporations, then they should be thinking about how they can help support these indie producers. Respecting the intellectual property rights of these producers would go a long way toward providing that support.

Still, this message just doesn’t seem to be getting out. Why? Well, the big media brands are just so loud, their voices are the only ones being heard. With some of the things they say and do, it’s no wonder that people are frustrated and looking for ways to fight back.

For example, lawyers and lobbyists from the entertainment industry like to throw out numbers about how much money and how many jobs are being lost due to copyright violations, but they don’t really tell us how they came up with these numbers or present them in a way that’s meaningful to the average Joe. As a result, people look at these numbers and figure they’re just a bunch of fiction created by slippery accountants. That just makes people even more bitter. So, in a very real sense, these types of analyses are having the exact opposite of their intended effects.

3 Reasons Why KDP Select May Be An Author's New Best Friend

When you publish your eBook using Kindle’s Direct Publishing service, you can opt to include it in Amazon’s KDP Select option, which means your eBook becomes part of the Kindle owner’s lending library.

Like most things involving publishing, there is a lively controversy raging over whether granting Amazon exclusive rights to distribute one’s digital book for 90 days is a good or bad thing. Since I love a good debate, I’m jumping right into the middle of this one to share my (limited) experience as a KDP Select author and my opinion on the subject.

Exclusivity

Let me relate this to the topic of my latest book: real estate. When you list your house with an agent, you grant them an exclusive right to market your property for a specified period. Your reason for giving them that exclusivity is your belief they will sell your property for the best price in the shortest amount of time.  Granting a mega-giant like Amazon exclusive rights to distribute your intellectual property is a good idea for the same reason: maximizing your sales potential in relation to your time and efforts. 

Win-Win

Whether someone buys or borrows your book from the Kindle owner’s lending library, you collect a royalty as long as you have abided by the terms of the program. While I’m grateful that my local libraries are supporting my work by purchasing copies of my book, I’m definitely not getting paid royalties when someone borrows it. However, according to the article "KDP Select Results After 3 Months," each time someone borrows a book from the Kindle lending library, the author earns an average of $1.75. What’s not to like about that scenario?

Marketing and Promotion

Borrowed books help you rank for position just the same as sold books. For instance, our Kindle version of Buying Your First Home? Insider Secrets You Must Know went live on March 9, 2012. At the time of this writing, we are already ranking #16 in Real Estate for the 100 Top Paid Best Sellers and #3 in the top 100 Hot Releases. As first-time authors, my co-author and I could hardly have expected to rank that well just based on our own marketing and promotional efforts! 

We expect to gain new readers because of the massive exposure our eBook has to Amazon Prime members and Kindle owners. Because we are part of the KDP Select program, we have access to other free promotional tools from Amazon. 

While the jury is still out on this program as it is relatively new and comprehensive data is not yet available, I believe that, at least for newer authors like myself who are establishing their brand and readership, the Kindle owner’s lending library could be a crucial element of your success or failure in the world of indie publishing.

Digital Inevitability Hits Encyclopedia Britannica

Victim or beneficiary indeed? This morning I saw an interesting piece on the plight of Encyclopedia Britannica and their decision to finally accept the need to focus on digital media as opposed to traditional print publication.

This is a decision that will not have been made lightly, and will disgruntle much of its core audience. After all, a 32 volume staple that has been in print for 244 years is going to have a considerable loyalty base and brand backing. But that backing and that audience has dwindled. Their ship has had to set sail as a result of societal shifts in knowledge culture, mobility, technology platform reach, and at a very fundamental level, as a result of our time.

The digital age is not new, and almost all types of content are destined to fail if they do not embrace the digital media of today. That is a given. But reader engagement and behavior seem to be far more important "laws of attraction" for online readership than pin point accuracy and professional opinion. That is a bad thing. However, content is now so readily available, and in most cases freely attainable. That is a good thing. The happy medium is in our ability to market content based on trusted personal insight and deeply respected, vertical-specific knowledge.

As an unavoidable trend, all content is shifting to digital platforms. Here the comparison between say an Encyclopedia Britannica and a Wikipedia is an obvious one to make, but comes at a cost. That cost is nostalgia. The historical value of such well-rounded reference material remains. It has stood the test of time and been a cultural icon. As a rich collection, it adds to knowledge wealth and credibility of personal understanding. This should not be underestimated.

Be that as it may, the modern day family, researcher, hobbyist or professional does not have the time, space or desire to flick and search via physical means. Certainly when it comes to finding and filtering information, nothing can do that better than the Internet. The problem is this: It’s a fast food culture. Too many online reference sites – I use the term “reference" loosely – do not have the credibility our research needs demand. The Encyclopedia Britannica gave us that credibility.

However, as they have said themselves, their print volumes go out of date as soon as they are published. That is an eye opening admission, and in many cases very true. The pace of society, the thirst for relevant, up-to-date information means print publications that deal in on-demand content have a very short shelf life. They have little to no margin in printed material coverage. The audience they seek and the demands on real-time relevancy dictate that they cannot survive without a quality content focus that is brought to readers via digital means and through simple, clean, effective platforms that will make them engage.

It is sad to see such a font of all knowledge make this decision, but it is the right one for so many reasons. How they monetize in this brave new world is another question entirely. After all, information is now so freely accessible, very few will pay for the digital permissions. That is not the audience that took pride in such a voluminous collection. The Encyclopedia Britannica is a cherished “possession” and that sense of feeling and personal touch is lost in a digital format. Understanding this and embracing the techniques to capture today's digital aficionado through online content marketing is the key. That is where skilled digital publishers are worth their weight in gold.

It is a very interesting time for traditional print publications. When Encyclopedia Britannica makes such a profound, far reaching and ultimately rational decision to embrace the digital age, it’s obvious everyone should… But let's do so based on understanding our audience and what we aim to achieve through digital means.

As Jorge Cauz, president of Encyclopedia Britannica says, “We’ve traded print dollars for digital pennies.” That unfortunately is a sign of the times and traditional institutions have to evolve to their customers' needs in a digital world that will see them bypassed and ultimately go out of business quicker than they realize if they stand still.

Open Journalism: The Three Little Pigs Ad



This ad for The Guardian newspaper is the best I’ve seen in a long time. It takes the familiar fairytale about the three little pigs and the big bad wolf who tries to blow their homes down and projects it into the modern day. In the full glare of the media spotlight the classic tale is reimagined and analysed from various angles. Did the pigs go too far? Even if the wolf was out of order did he deserve to be boiled alive? What’s the appropriate way to deal with a home invasion? Was the whole thing just an insurance fraud perpetrated by the pigs?

The production values are fantastic. The ad was created by BBH and apparently they also created scripts for Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella and Humpty Dumpty but in the end The Three Little Pigs was chosen. It was filmed in two 20 hour sessions and then effects were added over a period of four weeks. The result is impressive.

While this is a comical idea the point it is making about open journalism is serious. The modern media is not just about reporters and journalists telling the rest of us what happened. We are all equipped with the means to report on events ourselves. It is increasingly common for ordinary people on the street to submit photographs and video footage relating to big news stories. Blogging and posting articles and comments online is a part of daily life for many. News stories that grip people spread like wildfire across our social networks. There are multiple sides to every story and we’ve never had greater access to a variety of forums for debate. Open journalism isn’t just about passively reporting on events, it’s about taking part in them and driving change.

Infographics: Too Much Emphasis on Graphics, Not Enough on Info?


I recently read an article about infographics on Co.Design and it really hit a nerve, because it relates to something that has been annoying me for a long time. How often do people simply accept the information presented in these visuals and the results that they supposedly portray without questioning either the data sources or the method of presentation?

In this particular article, Cliff Kuang shows a very specific example of how the same data can be portrayed on three separate bar graphs with each graph telling the viewer a very different story. On one hand, this isn’t really anything new – it’s just another way that people “creatively” use statistics to back up their own beliefs and statistics. But, there’s really more than that going on here.

In many cases, infographic designers probably aren’t really trying to misrepresent the data through the means they use to portray it. Often, they’re just focusing on making a powerful visual statement because, as graphic designers, that’s what they do. Instead, what’s missing in a lot of these designs is input from a data analyst – or someone who knows how to look at the data, see what it is truly saying and then give recommendations on how to best portray that “truth.”

So, here’s the big question. If you’ve ever hired someone to produce an infographic for your business or organization, did you focus mostly on investigating the potential producer’s design skills or did you look for someone who also had a background in data analysis? Along that same vein, have you ever seen an infographic that made you wince because you felt the method used to portray the data was completely wrong – so wrong that it would give viewers false impressions?

Can You Launch a Startup in One Weekend?

If you would have asked me that question before this past weekend, I would have said, "Absolutely not".  But now I have seen it with my own two eyes.

I participated as a mentor in an event this weekend called "Startup Weekend: Tech Valley". This was one of dozens of these kinds of events around the globe and this particular one was in my backyard, in Troy, NY.  I personally have been in two successful startups in the town where the "Age of Innocence" was filmed.  One of them has IPO'd, the other one is still humming.

The concept is to bring lots of smart, hungry talent to bear with a few good ideas and see what can happen in 36 hours. Sprinkle in some mentors and service providers to help give them the advice they need over the weekend to launch a business, and there you go. A new company.

If you're one of those people paranoid that your idea is so unique and so great, then this probably isn't for you. If you read StartupWeekend.org's FAQ, you'll learn that 90% of the ideas presented have been pitched before. It's not because people walk in there thinking that they have to pitch low-IP (low intellectual property) ideas because they are afraid of it being stolen, but it's probably because someone has thought of your idea before. It's about execution in this case, and not uniqueness.

Here are some thoughts on who should hunt down one of these events and pitch:
  1. You've had this great idea for a website or an app, but just never could get momentum going.
  2. You're aching to do something new, feeling stagnant, and need to be reinvigorated.
  3. You have started your company, but want to take advantage of a lot of brain power to get it going in the right direction.
  4. You don't know anyone, and your Mom doesn't code.  So you want to meet people to help you, or be part of a team that needs your skill set.
  5. You've been out of college for a while, and you want to relive the atmosphere of a two-day cram session.

The Saints, Bounty Gate and Your Content Marketing Philosophy

The phrase on everyone’s lips right now is Bounty Gate...

I won't discuss the case here -- it isn't the place -- but I do have a topical point of interest to make, because the power of media and the part content marketing plays in your reputation relates massively to what has been transpiring in the New Orleans Saints' locker room in recent years.

Every social network, media outlet and discussion forum is abuzz with vastly differing opinions being aired, voiced, and deliberated. It’s a heck of a pickle and it reaches into the very soul of human integrity. It is such a huge issue of intent and misdirection from top to bottom of an organization.

But wait, Content That Rocks… this is a blog about content marketing right?

Right!

Stick with me on this…

When you think about the basic principles here -- and nothing is really this simple in the National Football League -- in a microcosm, should anybody, EVER play the game of football with the primary intent of hurting an opponent to the point where he could be permanently injured, and get rewarded for doing it? Wow, what values do you have? What type of integrity do you hold dear? In so many ways the same holds true in what you publish or read online -- especially when you are a trusted brand, product or service provider with a legacy to establish and preserve.

This is where we hopefully meet.

You see any organization, from the top brass of an NFL franchise to the home retailer trying to justify a scalable business opportunity needs to be VERY careful when delivering media, mission and messaging. It is so easy to get caught up in what will bring about a competitive advantage that ultimately results in ROI. Underhanded tactics, embellishment of truth, distortion of fact might look great, read great, say all the right things to excite a crowd, but you have no substance. You certainly don't have any modicum of integrity that today's online readership demands. 

Just as the New Orleans Saints are finding out right now, the truth will come out, eventually, some way, somehow. When it does, your entire reputation will be shot. How can anybody ever trust you again?

From there, it’s not about putting asterisks on trophies, dishing out fines or suspensions. This is not the NFL, but just as players and coaches are supposed to abide by fair play policy within the spirit of competition, this is your livelihood, your business at stake. Internally and externally you can cause irreparable damage without a quality content marketing focus that speaks the universal truth and to the right people. With your employees, customers and partners in mind, think about who you are representing and targeting. When you speak untruths and endorse embellishment, you are opening yourself up to suicidal business practices.

It’s a cynical world, and tough to gain a vantage point over your competitors in the endless pursuit of reaching audience and capturing market share. A model organization acts in good faith, trusting the quality of its products and services. It does not even consider the need to misdirect or distort. To do so would bring into question the very reasons why you are in business at all. With integrity and honor, your products and services will stand up to anybody, and your content marketing won’t land you in your own little world of Bounty Gate anytime soon.

More fool the Saints! More fool you if you choose to ignore this very important lesson!

Facebook Likes: Brand Marketing Dream


Do you identify yourself by the brands you like? Are you a PC or a Mac? Coca Cola or Pepsi? Burger King or McDonalds? What clothing brands do you wear? What kind of phone do you have? What kind of car? Like it or not we all project our brand likes to some extent. Whether you’re a fanatical member of the cult of Apple or you just love the taste of Mars Bars.

Facebook takes your likes to a new level by making them explicit. You can publicly like brands and in effect recommend them to your friends and family. You can also opt in to receiving a wave of marketing from your favorites. If you engage with the brand then you’ll see updates from them popping up regularly in your news feed. It’s not enough just to like them, they have to engage with you to get the traction they need because Facebook is checking behind the scenes and culling a lot of stuff from your news feed to prevent you from being swept away by a tidal wave of irrelevant updates. This means they need to suck you in with competitions, apps, games and all the other marketing tricks they can conjure.

Advertising has come a long way. The success that many brands have had engaging directly with consumers through social media has led to a crowd struggling to climb onto that bandwagon. Social media is cost effective and measurable so it’s a win-win for marketers. If they can get you hooked then their brand will be your friend for life and your public declaration of like will act as a free ad aimed at everyone you are connected to on Facebook. You can see why brands are happy to spend on social media presence from Facebook to Twitter to Google + and beyond, has it ever been so easy for them to get people to effectively sign up to receive marketing?

The stats for the most liked pages on Facebook make interesting reading. Predictably enough Facebook itself is number one with over 63 million likes. The Texas HoldEm Poker game is number two with over 58 million likes.  YouTube is number three with over 54 million likes. You’ve then got Eminem, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Shakira, Michael Jackson, Family Guy, and Harry Potter pushing The Simpsons out of the top ten. The top of the charts is dominated by music acts, movies, games, sports teams and stars and TV shows.

The first big recognizable brand is Coca Cola at number 15 with over 40 million likes. Starbucks pops up at 34 with nearly 29 million likes and you’ll find Oreo at number 48 with over 25 million likes. Skittles at 61 with 21 million likes are way ahead of the mighty McDonalds at 83 with only 17 million likes. Interestingly the top religious page is Jesus Daily at number 134 with over 12 million likes just below the LA Lakers and System of a Down.

So what does all this mean? Why are people willing to surrender their privacy and broadcast their favorite brands? Maybe it’s because they see these brands as part of their online identity, just like their favorite music, movies or books, or maybe it’s because they can get free stuff. What do you think?

Content Marketing: Backing Up Theory With Facts

The phrase "content marketing" gets tossed around a lot these days, but there are still a few groups who haven't fully realized the value of good branded content. Yes, the term may be a little overused and sound a bit too buzz-wordish, but that doesn't mean it's just another passing fad.

I'm a firm believer in the importance of content marketing  no matter what industry you're in  but I'm also much happier when there are facts to support the theory. Brafton has put together a great infographic (shown on the right) that illustrates some of these facts. Here are some key figures from the infographic that really caught my eye:

  • 61% of consumers are more likely to purchase goods from businesses that offer custom content. Just think what a difference that would make to your conversion rates.
  • 60% of business decision makers say branded content helps them make better product decisions.
  • 27 million pieces of online content are shared each day.
  • 60% of content-sharing messages specific to an industry mention a brand or product by name.

Why Baby Boomers Take Baby Steps with Digital Media

It’s time for me to admit the favorite time of my day is not posting on Facebook, tweeting and retweeting and reevaluating my profile on LinkedIn. I’m confused on tinyurls and the need for #FF so everyone knows it’s Friday. I have a Klout score but I don’t know how I got it and as far as Facebook goes, while I try to post the articles I write, no one seems to read them and instead, my friends post jokes and comments on bad days, birthdays and wow did you see that? I have been trying to create a Google+ hangout for a week now and I’ve just about given up!

How dare I make these statements?

It’s simple really—I’m a baby boomer and I fear digital media almost as much as when it was first rumored the Beatles were breaking up!

Growing up in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, my parents had four daughters born between the years 1949 and 1959—I being the last born. Even though I could probably cheat my way into Gen X, those born from 1964 and forward, I must admit, I fear their digital media knowledge.

I found an awesome post on baby boomers and digital media by Jamie Carracher on Mashable. In his story “How Baby Boomers Are Embracing Digital Media,” he points out in 2011 there were 80 billion baby boomers turning 65, who are essentially now old folks or senior citizens. At 53 years of age, I feel their pain because I am close behind. Carracher also reminded us who are media-handicapped that the father of the Internet, Vinton Gray “Vint” Cerf will be 69 years old in 2012 so he’s been a senor for a while now. I wonder how he’s coping?

Carracher admits seniors are using some media: “…recent trends show older people are among the fastest-growing demographics online” and “Internet users 50 years old and older has nearly doubled to 42% over the past year (2011). And, that “In the U.S. alone there are nearly 16 million people 55 and older using Facebook.”

I must protest Jamie sir! Ever seek out those 55 and older and take a gander at their Facebook pages? You’ll find sonograms of grandbabies, wedding photos and announcements and well, maybe even a few angry parents shooting a laptop or two. What I see when I look at my friends who are my age and older are posts on “Let’s do lunch” or “Heck you finally figured out Facebook!” or “Isn’t it nice to be retired?” That’s not using digital or social media—we of this age are now boring and turn to the fodder from our children and grandchildren in an attempt to be Internet savvy.

My husband recently gave me a new car. It’s a 2011 Chrysler 300C Hemi with an 8 cylinder engine. The car practically drives itself, has parking assist and I can even push a button and have cold air flow upward in my driver’s seat in case I’m having a hot flash. There’s even a button to keep my drink cups hot or cold. It also has voice commands in case I’m too lazy to press buttons. For example I can say, “Navigation” or “Phone” or “Climate” and the friendly voice will ask how they can help me. This means I have to say something back. Since my dogs (I have six) travel with me a lot, the commands given are usually barks or woofs and the computer in my car says, “Canceling Voice Chat!” so I’m back to relying on buttons again.

A typical trip in my car alone requires me to file a “flight plan.” Are the seats adjusted, are my mirrors where I want them to be? Where’s that button to move the steering wheel and adjustable pedals?  Where’s the fuel button to open the fuel door in case I have to get gas? And, since I don’t need a key (you just step on the brakes and press a button) I have to ensure my keys are in the vicinity of the vehicle such as my purse. I have to set up navigation favorites because the computer won’t let me change where I want to go while driving—I can, however, change if I’m stopped at a traffic light, but heck, I’m almost a senior citizen and my mind isn’t that fast!

Of course many of you are probably saying, “You can preset all those things!” Well, I know that! I’m not stupid, I just don’t want to sit in front of my TV and watch an hour long DVD on how everything in my car works! I want to read about it—but the manual is the DVD! I’ve tried to pair my phone to UConnect several times and have failed so I’m starting to think those headsets you clip to your phone with a super magnet will work just fine.

These are just the tech things in my car! Can you image what I face daily on the World Wide Web? At least good old Jaime Carracher offered in his post the American Association for Retired People (AARP) is taking advantage of Facebook and Twitter. According to Carracher, “One recent post (Facebook) on people who have given up landlines for mobile phones sparked 138 comments.” That amount of comments doesn’t seem high to me when you consider the number of hours folks spend on YouTube. The point of Carracher’s observations are the words “one recent post”; one doesn’t impress me much. Get back to me when every AARP Facebook post receives a comment—even two.

Then there’s Twitter where I’m supposed to spread the word about what’s up right now in 140 characters or less, and use a tinyurl! As far as Twitter goes, I can Tweet, but attempting to @tweet someone or #something is lost on this almost-senior.

Further, what is Klout anyway? Apparently my score isn’t as high as some of my writing colleagues and actually, I don’t care. Google+ seems to be taking over and if you’re not +oneing—you better start now! It doesn’t matter what you +one, just make sure it’s something you’re interested in so if questioned on your post, you can provide a knowledgeable answer.

I’m lost on LinkedIn and this is one digital social media venue that wants my money in order to see total profiles and contact others who are LinkedIn—sorry folks, I only go for the free digital media. So again, my LinkedIn page is in bad shape.

I’m sure somewhere out in digital media world there are folks like Carracher who writes a blog “Aging Online” and a visit to his blog left me feeling a little better about my digital media use and knowledge. I am not alone! My sister is also a writer and I remember a few years back when I was helping her figure out how to install a computer program. I told her to put the CD in her computer tower where the CD slot was. Bless her soul, she told me her computer didn’t have a “tire.”

Of course the anonymity of the Internet will keep me forever young and I can be as pretty and sassy as I want to be. No one need know I’m a grandmother or that watching Swamp People on the History channel is more exciting to me than watching American Idol on Hulu. You know, in reality the reason I like Swamp People is the people who appear on the show have thick Louisiana accents so the show comes with subtitles—yep my hearing isn’t what it used to be either.

Someday, when my grandson is 18, I hope I am still on top of what’s new in digital media. I guess if I stay involved in top trends, actually partake in some tutorials and ensure Carracher’s blog is my new BFF, I’ll be fine. But if not, I’m okay with that too.
